EXP 3 Mash Up

From as far as California and Georgia, Americans flocked here to experience something that once was unimaginable. They were here to experience history. On inauguration eve, the sight alone of a stretched limousine was sufficient to inspire squeals and shouts of joy. The Madonna moment comes two hours later, when she changes into knee-high silver boots for a television performance. As she walks past, she looks down her nose at me and says, "Who's got the better boots now?" She refers to herself as "the boss" and "the queen" when talking and this is one woman who is more than happy to put her money where her mouth is. Spectators at the inauguration day parade endured six-hour queues, morning chill and a total lack of official communications. There's nothing Miuccia Prada seems to like more than a challenge. She is part spiritualist, part narcissist; part provocative sex symbol, part children's-book author; part artist, part mother; and, thanks to her new aerobi-disco look, she is part retro, part futuristic. She is dressed in an ultra-feminine close-fitting, tie-dyed cardigan, roughly fastened at the waist with a thick, suitably weathered brown-leather belt, not quite matching tie-dyed shirt, below-the-knee dirndl skirt and flat, backless slippers. Any temporarily people-pleasing compromise aside, Miuccia Prada is, at heart, "a risk-taker". "I don't want a tiny one," she snapped. "I want a big one. I want the prettiest one. Well, I want the best” spoken with an almost evangelical sense of responsibility and matriarchal pride.

The Ramp

The Ramp within Cousteau's area as previously outlined featured prominently in the laboratories themselves. The ramp was kept as simple as possible to reinforce the fact that we are more often than not unaware of the journey's significance. Thus, its design aims to influence the pathway to the laboratory as discretely as possible. It is only through later perspective its design significance can be appreciated as a whole.

The Ramp leading to Nobel's laboratory was designed in a similar fashion. Both ramps a very direct and bear little influence to external sources. This approach is derived from the possibility of absolute engrossment in one's idea's and how this can lead to a rapid dismissal of alternate thought.

Jacques Cousteau's Laboratory

Cousteau's laboratory, behind the vertical surface, maintains an emphasis on exploration. The ramp has been incorporated as a core element to the space itself as it leads down towards the initial laboratory. The journey has been depicted here as an equally integral concept to one's explorations. Furthermore there is a sense of seductiveness as evidenced within the use of a darker tunnel - indicative of the overpowering nature of any explorational quest. The secondary laboratories also provide a perspective back into the main space and highlight the significance of one's journey or pathway that cannot be observed when still undertaking its course.

The Meeting Space

The meeting spaces for Nobel and Cousteau - an incorporation of large window planes to fulfill a sense of perspective (Cousteau) whilst a sense of naivety and innocence (Nobel) has been imposed upon the spaces themselves through their simplicity and the isolated design of the paths leading there.

Alfred Nobel's Laboratory

Alfred Nobel's laboratory was constructed in front of the vertical surface. The interior spaces are extremely simplistic, yet the frame structures on their exterior have been constructed to synthesize a sense of complexity that can be so easily ignored when revolving around our own ideas. Thus, there is only limited opportunity for any outward thought in the primary laboratory, it has been designed to emphasise a centering focus. The lighting also enhances the external structures to provide a lingering reminder of the complexities of the world.

The Black Box

I was particularly drawn to this slide due to the fantastic manipulation of light and colour tones. It really reflects the approach I have been taking to my laboratory spaces. The use of colour intensity is something I have been working with as in my opinion; it can dramatically influence a space in a manner which the other elements of design simply can’t. One of the key themes within my laboratory space for Jacques Cousteau is that of exploration and a sense of focus on the journey itself, rather than the final destination. The image contains a structure that could well be attributed to this explorative concept. Yet what I find fascinating is how the simple arrangement of varying light tones has really enhanced this notion and furthered it in its synthesis of a seductiveness that I don’t think could be replicated in any other way.
